Saving the Gap

Nothing like a bit of successful community activism for the soul.

In 2025, an interstate developer tried to purchase the last remaining access to an incredible stretch of Kangaroo Island coast known locally as ‘The Gap’.

Devastated by the prospect of never being able to explore this area again, a passionate group of islanders comprising of birdwatchers, hikers, fishermen & surfers made a concerted effort to stir up as many voices as possible.

Nautilus created a quick visual identifier for the movement, a ‘Save the Gap’ tag and posts for social media distribution. Calling upon individuals to have their say against the erosion of land for public enjoyment - not to block the sale outright - but to legally secure equivalent access to the coastline.

The campaign reached thousands of people, and resulted in hundreds of phone calls and submissions made to the local council opposing the sale.  A council meeting was called where a number of parties and myself were invited to present our submission to the council, developers and the public.

The developer accepted the negotiated terms of sale with a public easement being secured for generations to come.
